The program uses evidence-based strategies to create widespread changes in factors that contribute to the rising, epidemic levels of childhood obesity and related diseases such as diabetes. Some students are learning how to make a balanced meal from each of the food groups.  Others are learning the importance of fiber, water and herbs.  Students in the advanced level are learning all about calcium.  Did you know you can get more calcium from 15 almonds than a glass of milk?  Your 5th grader does.  Ask him/her what other plant sources are loaded with calcium!&lt;br /&gt;The children are learning about healthy eating behaviors and overall healthy lifestyles at a young age. They bring out many wonderful feelings: giving, sharing, loving, kindness, warmth, and friendship. Along with these wonderful feelings, comes festive meals. A typical holiday meal can be upwards of 2000-3000 calories, which is more than most of us need in an entire day. This overindulgence can sometimes lead to what people called the “unavoidable” holiday weight gain. During this holiday season don’t feel guilty and don’t forgo your favorite holiday foods. But at the same time, don’t adopt the “indulge now, diet later” attitude. Check out the Daily Breeze article posted on October 26, 2009.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Nutrition Education&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;/p&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Lesson 1 has been delivered to all students. The students recieved lessons on Mindful Eating, Foods from Around the World and much more.
